Core Architecture & Project Management

Feature Description Benefit Version introduced
Structured manuscript database Stores each manuscript as a SQLite-backed project rather than a conventional formatted document. Keeps prose, structure, metadata, entities, annotations, citations and other project data interconnected. V1
Continuous persistence Normal edits are written automatically to the manuscript database without a conventional manual-save workflow. Reduces the risk of losing ordinary editing work and removes save-management overhead. V1
Automatic snapshots Creates recoverable snapshots before significant changes and periodically while the manuscript is dirty. Provides historical recovery points without relying solely on manual backups. V1
Manuscript management Tracks and manages individual manuscript projects and reopening behaviour. Keeps multiple writing projects independent while making them easy to resume. V1
Local-first operation Projects are stored locally and do not require a cloud writing service. Allows offline work and keeps manuscript data under the author's direct control. V1
Windows support Native Windows desktop distribution. Provides a conventional desktop installation for Windows authors. V1
Linux AppImage Portable Linux distribution format. Allows SceneWeaver to run across a broad range of Linux distributions without conventional installation. V1
Linux DEB Debian/Ubuntu-family installation package. Provides conventional package installation on Debian-derived Linux systems. V1
Linux RPM RPM-family installation package. Provides conventional installation on RPM-based Linux distributions. V1
Historical release archive Older releases are retained rather than being replaced by the latest build. Supports rollback, regression testing and retrieval of exact historical versions. V1
Solid-state editing Every valid edit is written to the manuscript as it is made. Closing an editor neither commits nor discards what was typed, and Save and Apply buttons have been removed from project editors. Nothing is lost by closing a dialog, and there is no staged state to keep track of. V3
Independent restore-point choices Word edits count as superficial, paragraph additions, removals and moves as minor, and removing or moving a whole content node as major, with separate preferences for minor and major changes. You decide how much protection each kind of change earns rather than accepting one setting for all of them. V3
Reversible global preferences Application-wide preferences keep their own history, with a Restore Earlier Preferences action separate from manuscript restore points. A manuscript backup cannot restore application-wide configuration, so those settings are protected in their own right. V3
In-progress values kept for correction An invalid or incomplete entry stays on screen to be corrected instead of replacing the last valid stored value. A half-typed value cannot quietly overwrite good data. V3

Manuscript Structure

Feature Description Benefit Version introduced
Hierarchical manuscript structure Organises manuscripts into structural nodes such as Chapters, Scenes and Sections. Makes large works easier to navigate, reorganise and manage. V1
Structure drag reordering Allows structural nodes to be repositioned within the manuscript hierarchy. Makes restructuring substantially safer and faster than moving large blocks of prose manually. V1
Descriptions Stores planning descriptions independently from manuscript prose. Keeps planning information attached to the correct structural element. V1
Synopses Stores concise summaries for manuscript nodes. Provides a quick overview of Chapters, Scenes or Sections without rereading the prose. V1
Notes Stores non-public working notes against structural nodes. Keeps development information close to the relevant manuscript content. V1
Word targets Allows target word counts to be assigned to manuscript structure. Supports planning and progress measurement. V1
Word counts Tracks actual word counts across manuscript structure. Shows progress at Scene, Chapter and manuscript level. V1
Editorial statuses Supports To Do, Draft, Revised and Final states. Provides a simple editorial workflow for tracking manuscript progress. V2
Status colours Displays manuscript status using consistent visual colours. Makes editorial state recognisable at a glance. V2
Author-defined labels Allows coloured labels independent of manuscript status. Provides flexible user-defined classification without changing structure. V1
Split to child level Splits existing content into subordinate structural nodes. Quickly converts large sections into a finer hierarchy. V1
Split at same level Divides content into sibling nodes at the same hierarchy level. Allows scenes or sections to be separated without rebuilding structure manually. V1
Manuscript-to-Chapters split Divides manuscript-level content into Chapters. Speeds conversion of imported or initially unstructured prose. V1
Chapter split Splits Chapter content using SceneWeaver's structural workflow. Accelerates restructuring of long Chapters. V1
Structural integrity auditing Checks references to manuscript nodes across connected project systems. Helps prevent broken links and orphaned metadata after restructuring. V1

Full-text search Searches manuscript content across the project. Quickly locates words, phrases and passages in large works. V1
Writing within the surrounding book Sections other than the one being edited fade — pictures and entity markers with them — while keeping their formatting, and a click or an arrow key moves the caret into one. The neighbouring pages stay readable for context without being mistaken for the section being written. V3
Responsive typing in a long manuscript A keystroke is saved within its own transaction, and the page measurements are rebuilt a moment after typing pauses rather than on every key. A manuscript of well over a hundred thousand words stays responsive while writing. V3

Page View & Publication Layout

Feature Description Benefit Version introduced
Real paginated Page View Renders actual pages at the configured trim size rather than relying only on word-count estimates. Shows a close representation of the eventual printed book while still inside SceneWeaver. V3
Actual pagination Calculates page numbers from rendered layout. Keeps page counts consistent with the visible page representation. V3
Trim-size rendering Displays pages using selected physical book dimensions. Shows genuine line wrapping and page density for the intended format. V3
Publication margins Applies configured page margins to the live page layout. Makes Page View useful for print preparation. V3

Page-count-sensitive gutter Adjusts gutter allowance according to total book length. Accounts for thicker books requiring greater binding allowance. V3
Outside page numbers Places page numbers towards the outer edge of facing pages. Matches conventional book typography and keeps numbers away from the binding. V3
Roman front-matter numbering Uses Roman numerals for supported front matter. Matches common publishing conventions. V3
Arabic body numbering Uses Arabic numerals for the main manuscript body. Provides conventional body pagination. V3
Legacy page estimator Retains the original estimate-based page calculation as a fallback. Provides page information even when full pagination is not active. V1
Running heads and folios One page-furniture plan decides what prints above and below the text on each page, and is used by Page View, PDF, DOCX and print preview alike. The finished book carries the same headers and page numbers wherever it is produced, instead of each export deciding separately. V3
Configurable page furniture Headers can carry the title, the chapter, the author or nothing; page numbers can sit in the header or footer, centred or at the outside edge, and a chapter opening can omit either. Matches the conventions of published books without editing individual pages. V3

Entities

Feature Description Benefit Version introduced
Character Entities Structured records for people and characters. Centralises recurring character information and enables manuscript-aware tools. V1
Location Entities Structured records for places. Supports consistent world and location information. V1
Organisation Entities Structured records for groups, institutions, factions and organisations. Tracks recurring organised bodies independently from characters and locations. V1
Item Entities Structured records for significant objects, documents, vehicles, artefacts and machines. Keeps important recurring objects consistent and reusable. V1
Concept Entities Structured records for non-physical ideas such as religions, theories, philosophies, laws and belief systems. Extends Entity tracking beyond physical things. V2
Entity descriptions Stores descriptive information against Entities. Provides a reusable canonical description. V1
Entity notes Stores private development information. Separates working notes from public-facing content. V1
Concept-specific reduced fields Uses an appropriately smaller field set for abstract Concepts. Avoids irrelevant physical metadata for non-physical Entities. V2
Primary names Provides a canonical primary name for each Entity. Creates a stable identity for references and Tokens. V1
Keywords and aliases Allows alternate textual identifiers to refer to the same Entity. Recognises different ways of referring to the same thing in prose. V1
Entity introduction node Records where an Entity becomes valid within the manuscript. Supports continuity checking and contextual Entity behaviour. V1
Entity exit node Records where an Entity leaves its valid manuscript range. Supports detection of post-exit references and continuity issues. V1
Entity highlighting Visually identifies Entity occurrences in manuscript text. Makes references easier to audit. V1

Contextual Entity display Surfaces Entities according to manuscript context. Shows relevant world information where it is most useful. V1
Entity Variables Stores reusable values belonging to Entities. Provides a single canonical source for facts that recur in prose. V2
Variable-backed Tokens Makes Entity Variables available through the Token system. Allows changes to canonical data to propagate into manuscript output. V2
Presence across separate parts An Entity's presence in the manuscript is an ordered list of ranges — single positions, spans, or several separated periods — rather than one continuous stretch. A character who appears, leaves and returns can be recorded as they actually are. V3
Deliberate absence recognised Continuity treats a gap between an Entity's ranges as intentional and reports mentions that fall inside it. A character referred to while off-stage is flagged, without the absence itself being treated as an error. V3

Tokens

Feature Description Benefit Version introduced
Entity Tokens Stores dynamic manuscript references to Entity data rather than only fixed text. Keeps prose connected to canonical project information. V1
Convert to Token Converts recognised manuscript text to a Token through the editor. Avoids manually typing Token syntax. V1

Type filters Constrains Tokens to specific Entity types. Resolves ambiguous keywords shared by different Entity classes. V2
Token styles Supports presentation styles such as proper, capitalised, upper and lower. Preserves grammar and presentation without duplicating data. V2
Adjacent Token boundary protection Treats adjacent built-in Tokens as a protected editing block. Prevents corruption at Token boundaries during editing operations. V2
Built-in publication Tokens Provides system-derived values for supported publication sections. Avoids manually maintaining repeated publication metadata. V1
Variables that change through the book An Entity Variable can hold one value early in the manuscript and another later. New State from Here adds a bounded value without overwriting what was true before, while editing an existing value remains a correction. A rank, allegiance or appearance can change as the story does, and earlier chapters keep saying what was true then. V3
State-aware token resolution A token resolves to the value that applies where it sits, in the editor, in flat section, scene, chapter and manuscript views, in Page View and in every export. The same token reads correctly throughout the book without being duplicated for each value. V3
State-aware Signatures One Signature template follows every recorded value of a Variable, and the Continuity Check reports a known earlier value used where a later one applies. Catches a detail that was true once but is wrong where it now appears. V3

Signatures & Continuity Modelling

Feature Description Benefit Version introduced
Signatures Defines phrase-pattern templates representing expected or significant manuscript forms. Allows project-specific language and continuity rules to be checked automatically. V1
Optional node range Limits Signature rules to selected parts of the manuscript. Supports facts or terminology that change over the course of a story. V1
Signature continuity warnings Flags text that violates configured Signature expectations. Finds project-specific inconsistencies that grammar tools cannot understand. V1
Signature integrity checking Audits structural references used by Signatures. Prevents restructuring from silently breaking continuity rules. V1
Signature wildcards A Signature can match any of an Entity's names, a single word, up to five words without crossing a sentence ending, or an optional phrase. One Signature covers the ways a phrase is actually written, instead of needing a separate one for each variation. V3
Readable wildcard patterns Entity dialogs show what a wildcard Signature resolves to as plain words in the tooltip. You can tell what a Signature will match without decoding the pattern. V3

Story events Author-only events carry a name, a span of story time, a description and the Entities involved, stored independently of where they are written. What happens in the story can be recorded separately from where it appears in the book. V3
Event attachment A chapter, scene or section can be attached to one event through a context menu or by dropping it on the event's banner, without moving in the book or changing its place in the chronology. Links what was written to what happened, leaving both orderings intact. V3
Event range banners Events appear as banners above the content they span, with an author-only detail area and quick jumps to the Entities they involve. The shape of the story is visible above the material that tells it. V3
Event continuity checking The Continuity Check reports an Entity linked to an event but missing from any placed content inside the event's span, whether or not it was attached by hand. Finds a character who should have been present at an event but never appears in it. V3
Co-ordinated ordinal renumbering Tidying the Timeline's ordinals remaps event bounds and content positions together in a single operation. Renumbering the chronology cannot leave events pointing at the wrong place. V3
